Shopping that’s Good for the World

Posted by Deacon Nina Joygaard on

One of the more memorable gifts that I have given for Christmas was an “alternative gift.” I grew up with 3 sisters and my mom was a strong advocate for our education. One particular year, I donated to a charity that supported educating girls in areas around the world where that was not the norm. The gift came with a special card explaining the project and how it transformed these children’s futures. My mom read the card and wept. She was so touched by the thoughtfulness and the impact that this gift had – much more than had I found a lovely sweater or some jewelry.

This year, I invite you to consider alternative gifting to those for whom you would usually purchase a gift.  Some great options are:

ELCA Good Gifts -  Includes special gifts for many farm animals, honeybees, irrigation systems, microlending, Bibles for a growing church, educational options and much more. Stop by the church office to see a physical catalog if you prefer.

UNICEF - The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) provides incredible support around the world. You can choose a designation for an area of particular interest for your loved one. An especially timely gift can be made to the COVAX program through UNICEF, where 100% of donations are going directly to providing COVID-19 vaccines around the world.

Heifer International has a generous model where all recipients getting support “pass on” the gift once they are established. Options include cattle, biogas stoves, alpacas, a flock of chicks, seeds and more.

ELCA World Hunger or ELCA Disaster Relief – offer options to give to high areas of need around the world.

If you really want a physical gift to share with someone – consider an organization that supports artisans in areas of limited opportunity around the world.

My personal favorite is Sharing the Dream in Guatemala (our companion synod) – which features jewelry, wood & glasswork, coffee (YUM!) and a wide variety of textiles handmade in Guatemala.

10 Thousand Villages is another great option with nearly everything you could imagine from all around the world. You can shop online or visit their store at 520 Selby Ave in St Paul.
