Advent Creation Care Tip #1

A landfill becomes a symbol of the abundant resources we have been given.  Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks for these abundant resources.  But, misuse of these resources leads to higher and higher mounds of trash. “It looks like the 2,000 active landfills in the US that hold the bulk of this trash are reaching their capacity, according to a new report by the Solid Waste Environmental Excellence Protocol (SWEEP). The US generates more than 258 million tons of municipal solid waste each year — that’s all the packaging, clothing, bottles, food scraps, newspapers, batteries, and everything else that gets thrown into garbage cans and hauled onto sidewalks for weekly pick-up. Around 34.6% of that waste gets recycled, some gets burned for energy, and the rest gets sent to landfills.”  (www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/us-landfills-are-filling-up/)

We are called to manage these resources wisely. What are possible responses:

  • avoid excess packaging,
  • avoid impulse buying,
  • be mindful of the amount of waste produced

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
